How to Be An Historian
This special Masterclass was held at the 2017 Chalke Valley History Festival. Dr Sam Willis and Dr Suzannah Lipscomb were joined by Jessie Childs and Prof. James Daybell to guide our attendees through some of the skills of being a historian. The challenges (and rewards) of researching in archives were discussed as well as online resources available to historians. Document analysis, notetaking techniques, palaeography, and material culture were all introduced. How do you analyse a document for its content? How do you analyze a document as an historical object? How do you ‘read’ any historical object – in this case, a glove? Attendees raised numerous important questions relating to their own particular fields of interest and we all left feeling inspired to hit the archives, libraries, and museums. A healthy and sociable lunch closed the session. A wonderful, stimulating, and convivial morning.
