History Masterclass with Suzannah Lipscomb: Was Henry VIII a Tyrant?
October 13 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
In this History Masterclass, Dr Suzannah Lipscomb examines the reality and legacy of one of our most infamous monarchs, Henry VIII. Looking at documents from Acts of Parliament to poetry, contemporary judgements and definitions of tyranny, and the series of beheadings and executions carried out in the king’s name, she will explore, with the Masterclass group, whether it is legitimate to call Henry VIII a tyrant, and what that really means for our understanding of our past.
Dr Suzannah Lipscomb is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. She is a Reader in Early Modern History at the University of Roehampton and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and received her MA, MSt, and DPhil in History from Lincoln and Balliol Colleges, Oxford. She has written and edited six books, including two on Henry VIII (1536: The Year that Changed Henry VIII and The King is Dead: The Last Will and Testament of Henry VIII); has presented twelve TV history documentary series on BBC, ITV, Channel Five etc; and writes a regular column for History Today.
